Continental Celebrates Roofing Ceremony for New Russian Tire Plant

Continental has announced the successful completion of another milestone in the construction of its greenfield tire plant in Kaluga, Russia: one of the main buildings of the future plant has been roofed. Continental aims to complete the project in less than two years, and the latest stage was completed in line with this tough schedule.

The Continental Greenfield project in Kaluga is part of the development strategy of the corporation’s Tire Division. The investment in the project will amount to €240 million and after its start-up in 2013 the plant will produce 4 million tires per year, with production capacity, increasing in a final stage to 16 million tires per year. The production is set to begin in october 2013 and 400 jobs will be created until then. This number will be doubled by the end of 2014. Continental in Kaluga will produce summer and winter tires under Continental’s three brands – Continental, Gislaved and Matador, and consumers will be offered all the product types and sizes used in Russia today. The tyres will be sold on both the primary and the secondary markets.

In addition to the tire plant, the ContiTech Division is going to build a new production facility on this land plot for hoses and hose systems for different automotive applications. Investment volume will be more than €10 million. Last year Continental invested already €6 million in the automotive electronics plant in Kaluga, in a new production line, to expand production capacity of engine control units.

In Russia, the company is represented by the trading company OOO “Continental Tyres RUS” in Moscow, the tyre plant which is under construction OOO “Continental Kaluga” and a plant for the production of automotive components OOO “Automotive Systems RUS” in Kaluga as well as an automotive component plant in Chistopol (Tatarstan).

400 new employees to join the team and be trained for start-up in 2013
